When the Tests Keep Coming Back "Normal": Looking Beyond Symptoms
Few things are more frustrating for a parent than hearing, "Everything looks normal," when you know your child is still struggling.
You've watched them battle sleep difficulties, emotional meltdowns, sensory overload, digestive issues, poor focus or ongoing anxiety.
You've had blood tests.
Perhaps you've seen specialists.
Maybe you've tried supplements, therapies or different approaches, yet you're still left wondering why your child doesn't seem to be thriving.
If this sounds familiar, you're certainly not alone.
Sometimes, "normal" test results simply mean those particular tests weren't designed to measure the challenges your child is experiencing.
What Most Medical Tests Are Designed to Do
Modern medicine has incredible tools for identifying disease, injury and structural problems.
Blood tests can identify nutritional deficiencies, infection and inflammation.
Imaging such as MRI or CT scans can detect structural changes.
EEGs assess electrical activity within the brain.
These investigations are incredibly important when they're needed.
However, many parents are surprised to learn that they don't necessarily tell us how well the nervous system is functioning day to day.
A child can have completely normal medical investigations while still experiencing challenges with emotional regulation, sensory processing, adaptability or stress.
Why the Nervous System Matters
The nervous system coordinates communication throughout the entire body.
It constantly receives information from the environment, processes that information and helps the body decide how to respond.
This influences many aspects of everyday function, including:
Emotional regulation
Sleep
Digestion
Movement and coordination
Sensory processing
Attention
Learning
Adaptability to stress
When the nervous system is functioning well, children are generally better able to adapt to the demands of everyday life.
When it's under increased stress, those same everyday demands can become much more difficult.
Looking Beyond Symptoms
Many of the families we meet have already explored several different avenues of care.
Occupational therapy.
Speech therapy.
Physiotherapy.
Paediatricians.
Psychologists.
Dietary changes.
Supplements.
These approaches can all play valuable roles.
However, many parents tell us that nobody has ever assessed how their child's nervous system is functioning.
That's where INSiGHT Scans fit into the picture.
What Are INSiGHT Scans?
INSiGHT Scans are non-invasive assessments that help us evaluate how the nervous system is adapting to stress.
Rather than looking for disease or structural problems, they provide objective information about nervous system function.
At Healthy Families Chiropractic, we perform these scans during a child's initial assessment and repeat them throughout care to monitor changes over time.
This allows us to compare progress using objective measurements rather than relying solely on symptoms.
The Three INSiGHT Scans Explained
NeuroThermal Scan
The NeuroThermal Scan measures patterns of temperature along the spine.
These patterns can provide information about autonomic nervous system regulation and how the body may be responding to stress.
Because the scan is gentle and non-invasive, it can be performed on people of all ages, including infants.
Surface EMG (sEMG)
The Surface EMG assesses muscle activity along the spine.
This helps us identify areas where muscles may be working harder than expected, which can reflect patterns of stress within the nervous system.
It also allows us to track changes in these patterns throughout care.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
Heart Rate Variability measures how adaptable the autonomic nervous system is.
Rather than looking at how fast the heart beats, HRV examines the variation between heartbeats.
Higher adaptability generally reflects a nervous system that is better able to respond to and recover from everyday stress.
Lower adaptability may indicate a nervous system under greater demand.
Why We Use All Three Together
Each scan measures a different aspect of nervous system function.
Together, they help us build a more complete picture of how your child's nervous system is adapting.
No single scan tells the whole story.
Instead, we combine the scan findings with your child's history, examination and clinical presentation to better understand what may be contributing to the challenges your family is experiencing.
Why Objective Measurements Matter
Parents are often told to "wait and see."
Sometimes that's appropriate.
Sometimes it isn't.
One of the benefits of objective assessments is that they allow us to monitor nervous system function over time rather than relying only on whether symptoms seem better or worse.
This helps us track progress throughout care and make more informed clinical decisions.
Looking Beyond "Everything Is Fine"
If you've repeatedly been told that everything looks normal but your child is still struggling, it doesn't mean your concerns aren't valid.
It may simply mean there's another piece of the picture that hasn't yet been assessed.
Understanding how the nervous system is functioning can provide valuable information alongside the other assessments and healthcare providers already involved in your child's care.
